Allison Cara Tolman was born in the United States. Vanity Fair said that Tolman, "calmly" and "assuredly", stole the show. Tolman was awarded the Critics' Choice Television Award for her performance in the category Best Supporting Actress in movies/ministries. Additionally, her nominations in the category of Best Actress were received at the Emmy Awards as well as the Golden Globes. Tolman was cast in a two episode guest role in the role of romance novelist Abby Berman on The Mindy program the following year. In 2015, her supporting character was on Michael Dougherty's film horror comedy Krampus. Tolman's breakthrough role in the film in the film as Fargo was the reason she decided to leave various supporting roles, such as mother roles and best friends, wives and husbands.
